In-game free spins are extra reel spins governed by a slot feature. A separate stake is usually not deducted for each of them, but entering the bonus can follow a paid spin or feature purchase. “Free” does not mean guaranteed profit.
A game feature versus a casino promotion
In-game free spins start under the slot rules, for example through designated symbols or another feature. Their stake, number and payouts belong to the current game.
Casino promotional free spins are a separate offer. They can have game restrictions, expiry, a fixed spin value, withdrawal limits and wagering conditions. Do not transfer the terms of one promotion to another.
Read each modifier separately
Free spins may introduce sticky Wilds, expanding symbols, collectors or multipliers. Find out what a multiplier applies to: a payline, symbol group, cascade or total payout.
Persistence depends on the rules. A multiplier may carry across spins, reset after a cascade or apply only when a specific event occurs. Similar-looking slots need not follow the same procedure.
What a retrigger means
A retrigger restarts or extends a feature during the bonus. The rules specify the required symbols, additional spins and any limits.
A feature without retriggers does not necessarily have a small maximum win. Retriggers do not guarantee a long round either: the number of extensions and their probabilities depend on the model.
Why spin count does not establish value
Two features awarding ten free spins can have different payout distributions. The spin count, multiplier strength or grid size cannot establish the mean payout or volatility.
Trigger frequency is insufficient too: overall RTP includes the base game and all features. Relating bonus frequency to average bonus payout requires that feature’s contribution to RTP and a precise definition of frequency.
What a purchase price tells you
If a feature can be purchased, its price is the entry cost. Only its own applicable RTP allows an expected total payout calculation: price multiplied by that RTP.
A hypothetical 100-unit purchase with a purchase RTP of 96% has an expected payout of 96 units. That is neither the median nor a prediction for one round. A costly mode or more free spins does not promise to repay the price.
Counting spins after a retrigger
Suppose a bonus awards ten free spins. After four have been used, an event adds five more. The remaining-spin counter becomes eleven: six unused spins plus five new ones.
| Quantity | Spins |
|---|---|
| Initially awarded | 10 |
| Already used | 4 |
| Added by the retrigger | 5 |
| Remaining after the extension | 11 |
| Total awarded in the feature | 15 |
Eleven is the remaining allowance; fifteen is the total awarded. Confusing those quantities can make a correct extension look incomplete. To check it, identify when the retrigger occurred, how many spins had already been consumed and how many the event should add.
A counter returning to zero at the end of the feature does not mean the payout disappeared. The total feature award and attempts remaining are different quantities. An upgrade may carry unused spins into another mode or provide a new set. That transition is different from simply adding five spins.
British RTS 3 requires information about a multi-state game’s current state where customers need it to understand progress. The spin count and active-mode label therefore convey useful information. For a paid entry, measure the result against the full purchase cost, rather than against the counter left on the screen.
