Hold and Win is a family of bonus mechanics combining locked symbols with repeated spins of available positions. Similar names do not imply identical rules. Trigger counts, counters and final payouts depend on the particular game.
The respin principle
In a common implementation, cash symbols stay on the grid while empty positions receive new outcomes. A counter tracks remaining respins and may reset when a qualifying symbol appears.
This describes a principle, not a universal rule of three respins or six trigger symbols. Check what starts the mode, what locks and which events restore the counter.
When a round ends
A feature may finish when its counter runs out, the grid fills or another specified condition occurs. Some games add positions or multiple grids during the feature.
A full grid does not always necessarily award a Grand. Check its trigger, prize value and whether it replaces or adds to symbol totals. A maximum-payout limit may also end the feature.
Collectors and multipliers
A collector may sum cash values; a multiplier may affect a symbol, cell or total payout. The application order and repeated activation rules matter.
Similar icons in two slots do not prove identical behaviour. Where a value has been collected, establish whether it remains available to collect again and whether jackpot symbols are included.
What actually differs between games
Compare trigger conditions, counters, grid expansion, special symbols and payout units. More functions do not establish a high mean payout.
A 3×3 grid does not automatically trigger bonuses more often than a 5×3 grid. The Hold and Win label establishes neither volatility nor frequency nor a required bankroll. Numerical claims need a source for the actual model.
A verified example of variation
BNG’s description of 3 Hot Teapots: Hold and Win identifies feature-triggering meters and additional variants involving value collection, a second grid and cell multipliers. It illustrates variation within the family.
Its description cannot be transferred to Big Bamboo, Floating Dragon or any other respin game. A fixed jackpot within a feature need not be a shared progressive pool either.
Following a respin counter
Consider an illustrative feature that starts with three respins and resets the counter to three whenever a new cash symbol appears. Occupied positions remain locked; only empty positions receive new outcomes.
| Step | New cash symbol | Respins left afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Feature begins | — | 3 |
| First respin | No | 2 |
| Second respin | Yes | 3 |
| Next respin | No | 2 |
After the second step, three means attempts still available, not spins already played. The feature can therefore last longer than three respins. Restoring the entire counter and adding one attempt are different rules, so identify which action a new symbol performs.
Cash-symbol values need the correct unit too. If three locked symbols show 2x, 3x and 5x and the rules add their values, the total is 10 stakes. At a stake of 0.50, that pays 5. Separate fixed prizes or multipliers enter the result only as specified for the particular feature.
BNG’s 3 Hot Teapots variants use collectors, another grid and cell multipliers; a counter alone does not describe every version. With jackpots, distinguish a prize of a defined value from a shared growing pool. A Grand label does not establish where its funds come from.
