A slot card helps compare rules and published specifications. It cannot predict a session. Establish which version and mode it describes, which stake the multipliers use and how complete the source information is before comparing games.
RTP: return relative to turnover
Theoretical RTP is average payout relative to stakes in the model. It is neither a promise to repay part of a deposit nor the frequency of profitable rounds. Where versions exist, the selected operator’s figure may differ from the catalogue.
Check the figure’s source and scope: base game, feature purchase or a game including jackpots. Percentages for different modes cannot be treated as the same measure without explanation.
Volatility: spread, not frequency
A volatility rating describes payout spread. Qualitative scales may differ between studios, and an editorial label cannot replace a numerical model.
A low rating does not ensure a long, smooth session, and a high one does not promise a large payout. Neither establishes a sufficient bankroll or the mean number of spins until a feature.
Maximum win: establish the units
A maximum may be a multiple of total stake, line stake or a cash limit. Check whether the restriction applies to one spin, a full sequence or a bonus round.
If a maximum is 5,000× total stake, a total stake of 1 unit gives a ceiling of 5,000 units. This hypothetical unit conversion says nothing about probability. A large ceiling does not imply a fixed number of spins between maximum wins.
Grid and payout mechanism
Reels and rows describe the grid. Paylines specify paying paths, ways describe combinations across participating reels, and clusters are connected symbol groups. Pay-anywhere mechanisms may require a symbol count without adjacency.
Check minimum counts, direction, Wild behaviour and cascades in the rules. More lines, cells or ways do not establish higher RTP, frequent bonuses or greater volatility.
Stakes and mode prices
Establish whether the displayed stake is total or per line, which currency the range uses and whether additional charges apply. A feature purchase may cost many times the selected ordinary stake.
Game limits, operator restrictions and promotional conditions are separate rules. A feature available in one version may be absent in another. A catalogue’s stake range is not universal across markets.
Distinguishing the selected stake from the amount charged
Start a comparison with the amount leaving the balance. An illustrative 0.50 ordinary stake, a mode charging 25% extra and a purchase priced at 100 stakes can appear as options in the same game. Their costs differ.
| Illustrative mode | Calculation | Cost of one entry |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary spin | 0.50 | 0.50 |
| Spin with a 25% surcharge | 0.50 × 1.25 | 0.625 before rounding |
| Purchase priced at 100 stakes | 0.50 × 100 | 50 |
The game’s cashier determines actual rounding and available increments. These figures explain units rather than a particular operator’s offer. Establish whether an award is based on the ordinary stake or the full amount including the surcharge.
RTP describes a configuration’s average return, while volatility describes variability. Neither follows from the amount charged. British RTS 3 requires accessible rules and payout information before participation; the current mode also matters during a multi-stage feature.
