Cluster Pays vs Scatter Pays: Adjacency, Cascades and Payouts

Cluster Pays awards groups connected under the game’s adjacency rule. Paying for a number of matching symbols anywhere usually does not require that connection. Similar square grids and cascades can conceal different payout calculations.

What forms a cluster

A common implementation requires matching symbols to touch horizontally or vertically. The individual game determines permitted adjacency and minimum group size.

Five symbols is not a universal threshold. Check Wild behaviour, separate groups and how groups merge. The appearance of a grid alone cannot reconstruct those rules.

Pay-anywhere awards

A pay-anywhere or scatter-pays mechanism may require a specified symbol count regardless of position. Its threshold and payouts belong to the individual paytable.

This differs from a bonus Scatter symbol that may trigger free spins. A symbol’s name and the base-game payout mechanism are separate concepts. Scatter symbols do not make a slot a cluster game.

Cascades and payout calculation

After a winning event, a game may remove designated symbols and refill the positions. Any subsequent payout is calculated from the next grid state under the rules.

Check what disappears, how Wilds work and when the sequence ends. Cascades can accompany different payout systems; they do not themselves establish that a game uses Cluster Pays.

Cell and symbol multipliers

A multiplier may belong to a cell, symbol or entire group. Multiple values can be added, multiplied or handled differently, so the exact instruction matters.

Sugar Rush’s supplier describes marked positions and multipliers that persist during free spins. That is a Sugar Rush rule, not a rule transferable to every cluster game.

What grid size cannot establish

A larger grid does not prove longer cascades or greater volatility. Pay-anywhere awards do not guarantee more frequent small payouts than connected clusters either.

Without symbol and payout distributions, you cannot establish RTP, mean bonus payout or a smooth session. Maximum win and cell count cannot replace the mathematical model.

Why five matching symbols may not form a cluster

Sugar Rush and Reactoonz award clusters starting at five matching symbols. Establish their connection before counting the group size. For an illustrative game allowing side-to-side adjacency only, these arrangements produce different results.

Arrangement of five symbols One connected group Five-symbol threshold met
All connected by sides Yes Yes
Separate groups of 2 and 3 No No
Touching only at corners No No

Two separate groups do contain five matching icons in total. Adding 2 and 3 does not connect them into one cluster, though. If each group is evaluated separately, each must meet the size requirement on its own. A Wild can change the connection only where the rules provide for it.

A cell multiplier does not replace a missing symbol either. A payable combination must form before its enhancement rule applies. A 4x value on an empty position or one outside the winning group does not create an award by itself. Diagonal connections, Wilds and multiplier order belong to the individual game’s specifications, rather than to the Cluster Pays label alone.
