Book of Egypt review
Book of Egypt by Platipus uses a 5×3 grid, ten lines and an expanding symbol during free spins. Anubis statues, gold, a pharaoh mask, scarab, ankh and Eye of Horus frame its temple setting. The main distinction is between a regular line and bonus expansion: the latter can pay even when the relevant reels are not adjacent.
Regular lines and the book’s role
The ten lines read left to right from reel one. Cards 10–A are lower symbols and the four artefacts are higher. A regular combination needs adjacent reels without gaps. Matching symbols on reels one, three and five do not by themselves form that regular line.
The book triggers free spins as a Scatter. The official card also lists a Wild but does not describe every substitution exception. A Wild therefore should not be assumed to replace a Scatter, nor should another game’s combined book role be transferred here. A symbol’s cash payment and a feature trigger are separate events.
Regular play revolves around lines. Familiar Egyptian symbols do not establish cascades, Mystery functions or a multiplier taken from a different book slot. Symbol type, combination length and line position matter to settlement, rather than simply counting matching pictures anywhere across the screen.
Ten free spins and a randomly selected symbol
Three or more Scatters anywhere trigger ten free spins. Before they start, the game randomly chooses a special expanding symbol. It cannot be selected by the player. Its special role applies during the feature rather than turning all ordinary paid spins into bonus spins.
The feature keeps the paylines and bet of its triggering spin. A fresh stake is not selected for each free spin. If the feature begins at a total bet of 0.50, its payments use that basis even if earlier paid spins used a different amount.
Landing Scatters again during the feature awards another ten free spins. A retrigger increases the remaining spin count. It is not a bonus purchase and does not require a new paid stake. The Book of Egypt technical description does not advertise adding a second expanding symbol when this happens.

Regular payment comes before expansion
During free spins, ordinary symbol payments are settled first. The special symbol can then expand when enough appearances are present for a win. The feature description allows coverage across two to five reels. This does not promise expansion from any isolated symbol: the selected symbol still needs a qualifying set.
After expansion, payment applies on all played lines. Reels carrying the special symbol can be nonadjacent. A qualifying set on reels one, three and five can therefore pay in the feature even though those gaps would prevent a regular line. That separate settlement rule gives expansion its effect.
| Stage | What is calculated |
|---|---|
| Regular symbols | Ordinary combinations are paid before expansion |
| Special-symbol check | Enough appearances must be present for its win |
| Reel expansion | The special symbol covers two to five reels |
| Feature payment | Nonadjacent reels qualify; all played lines apply |
Ordinary and expanded payments can belong to different stages of the same spin. They are not two separately purchased spins. The number of regular symbol types also does not reveal each type’s selection probability. Nine possible types do not establish equal one-in-nine chances because selection weights are not published in the sheet.
The 94% RTP belongs to the described configuration
The Platipus technical sheet gives Default RTP as 94% and volatility as high. Across turnover of 1,000 currency units, that represents a theoretical return of 940 and a difference of 60 over a very large series. Turnover is the sum of all stakes, including recycled winnings, rather than necessarily the first deposit.
A 94.98% figure should not be substituted into that calculation as though it described the same configuration. If a particular version specifies 94.98%, its theoretical difference at the same turnover is 50.20. The two settings differ by 9.80 per 1,000 staked. That compares mathematical settings; it does not promise a particular remaining balance after one session.
High volatility describes payout variation. It does not schedule bonuses or tell you how many spins remain until the next trigger. The frequency of any payment and the frequency of free spins are separate measures too. RTP alone cannot calculate either without additional data.

The stake and payment ceiling measure different things
The technical sheet lists a minimum total bet of 0.10. That is the spin amount, not 0.10 for each of ten lines. Currency and upper stake levels depend on the loaded configuration. A 0.10–100 range cannot automatically be applied to every operator’s launch: the sheet does not specify an upper limit of 100.
The same care applies to a 900x figure. For a version that actually sets that ceiling per spin, a 0.20 stake converts it to 180 currency units, while a stake of 1 converts it to 900. This translates a multiplier into money. It neither establishes an average payment nor proves that the entire free-spin total has the same limit. Ending the whole feature at a ceiling requires a separate rule.
Increasing the stake changes the cost of a paid spin and the cash size of a payment. It does not establish a higher chance of landing Scatters. For example, 50 paid spins at 0.10 create turnover of 5, while the same count at 1 creates turnover of 50. Without a change in the mathematical setting, more turnover does not create a different trigger rule.
How other book games differ
Book of Ra Deluxe uses Novomatic’s format, while Book of Dead is Play’n GO’s version. Their titles and expanding symbols make the familiar mechanic recognisable. A shared theme does not make payouts, book roles or mathematical configurations identical.
| Game | RTP and variation | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Book of Ra Deluxe | 95.10%; very high | 5,000x |
| Book of Dead | 96.21%; high | 5,000x |
| Book of Aztec | 96.30%; medium | 5,000x |
| Legacy of Dead | 96.58%; high | 5,000x |
Book of Aztec is Amatic’s version. In Legacy of Dead, a retrigger adds a special symbol. Book of Egypt confirms another ten spins without advertising that extra-symbol rule. This is a meaningful difference within the shared book-slot format that similar artwork can hide.

Identifying the Platipus edition
Several studios use the Book of Egypt title. The Platipus official card gives 24 May 2018 as its release date, while the technical sheet lists Game ID 465 and Launch ID bookofegypt. A circulating October 2017 date conflicts with the studio’s own date. The title without the developer does not distinguish those editions.
The identifier helps separate games sharing a name. Together with the studio name, it matters when another Book of Egypt offers a bonus purchase, different RTP or a different maximum. Those features do not transfer to the Platipus release simply because the titles match.
