A Chinese-themed 5x4 slot built on Super Wilds: base play scatters Wilds, the bonus keeps the carriers sticky; the studio labels it medium volatility.

Dragon Hero review

Dragon Hero was released on 5 January 2023, the date given by the press release “Pragmatic Play distributes wilds in Dragon Hero”. The 5×4 slot has 20 fixed paylines and rests on one idea: Wilds do not merely substitute, they fly across the screen after the spin. The studio labels the game medium volatility, the RTP is 96.00% and the win cap is 5,000x. The intro screen promises “Sticky symbols that spawn more wilds in free spins”, so the core pitch comes straight from the developer.

A Chinese courtyard under a purple sky

The scene is built from eastern details: red lacquered pillars with gold dragons, banner lanterns on both sides, a pagoda at dusk and the pink glow of a dragon in the night sky on the left. A red “Buy Free Spins” sign with its price hangs left of the reels. The high symbols sit on coloured tiles: a gold ingot on purple, a green jade toad with coins and a koi carp on a blue wave. After them come a jade teapot, a scroll with a red ribbon and a string of charm coins on a scarlet tassel. The card ranks A, K, Q, J and 10 are drawn as glyph-like letters in red, green, blue and lilac.

The 5×4 grid is tall for a line slot, and that is deliberate: four rows leave more cells for the Wilds that get thrown across the screen. Everything else stays plain, with no tumbles, no win multipliers and no jackpots. The interest rests on two mechanics, the Super Wilds and the bonus wheels.

The smallest coin is 0.01 and the largest 12.00, while the number of lines is fixed, so the total bet is always the coin times 20. The demo opens at 2.00, which is the 0.10 coin; the studio demo itself runs without registration and with a virtual 100,000.

What the ingot, toad and koi pay across twenty lines

Wins are read from the leftmost reel through neighbouring reels, and only the highest win on a line is paid. At a 2.00 stake the demo paytable shows coins; the table restates them as bet multiples. Combinations start at three symbols.

Symbol 5 of a kind 4 3
Wild 60x 10x 3.75x
Gold ingot 40x 7.5x 2.75x
Jade toad 25x 4.5x 1.75x
Koi carp 15x 3x 1.25x
Teapot 10x 1.75x 0.75x
Scroll 7.5x 1.25x 0.75x
Charm coins 5x 1x 0.5x
A and K 2.5x 0.6x 0.35x
Q, J and 10 1.25x 0.35x 0.15x

Five ingots on a line give 40x, while the Wild’s own combination pays one and a half times that, though five Wilds on one line are rare. Usually the Wild works as a substitute, and three low cards return 0.15x to 0.35x, well under the price of the spin. The money here arrives from several lines at once, when Wilds cover many rows in one spin. Twenty lines over twenty cells means each cell sits on five lines on average, so one Wild often helps several combinations at once.

The MEDIUM badge on the rules screen places the game between slots with frequent small wins and slots with rare huge streaks; how that scale works is covered in the article on slot volatility. The developer publishes neither the hit frequency nor the bonus frequency.

The Super Wild: three reels, three wild sources

An ordinary Wild replaces every symbol apart from the Scatter. Reels 2, 3 and 4 can also show a Super Wild, and the rules give it a job of its own. On landing it holds 1, 2 or 3 Wilds, the number picked at random. After the reels stop, those Wilds are sent to random spots on the screen, and only then does the game evaluate the lines, keep the highest combination on each and pay the total in one amount. A first glance at the stopped reels therefore cannot tell you the spin’s value: part of the win is born after the stop.

Reels 2 to 4 can carry up to three Super Wilds, each with three Wilds inside, so one base-game spin can throw at most nine Wilds. Such a layout is a rarity; more often a single Super Wild arrives with one or two Wilds.

Overlaps and the first reel

The rules say outright that several Wilds can hit the same position. For the payout a second Wild on the same cell is redundant, so some of the Wilds sent are wasted and the screen looks poorer than what was sent. If each Wild picks any of the 20 cells with equal probability and independently (the rules do not spell this out), nine Wilds cover about 7.4 cells on average, a little over a third of the grid, and each further Wild brings fewer new substitutes.

The second quirk comes from the direction of payouts. Super Wilds appear only on reels 2, 3 and 4, while a line starts on reel 1, which the carriers never land on themselves. Only the scattered Wilds can help there, and the first reel holds four of the twenty cells, 20% of the grid. Under the same rough model at least one of three Wilds lands on reel 1 about half the time, and one of nine almost always (around 87%), which is why piling up Wilds in the bonus matters more than it seems.

Wheels instead of a fixed number of spins

Free spins are triggered by Scatter symbols, which can drop onto any reel. The number of spins is not read from a table, though. It comes from wheels. Three Scatters give six bonus wheels, four give eight and five give ten. Before the round each wheel spins on its own and hands out 1, 2 or 3 spins, and the results are added up: three Scatters bring 6 to 18 spins, four 8 to 24, five 10 to 30.

The spread is wide, so one trigger can produce a short round or a long one, and two rounds cannot be compared by the Scatter count alone. The bonus has no retrigger, and extra Scatters add no spins. They have a different job.

Sticky carriers and the half-Wild from a Scatter

In free spins the Super Wilds stop disappearing. Each one that lands stays on the grid through the last spin and sends Wilds to random positions after every spin, while the order in which a spin is settled stays the same as in the base game. The load it carries stays what it held on arrival: 1, 2 or 3 Wilds. The reel strips in the round are special and differ from the base game. The round’s win is added up and paid after the last spin.

The Scatter gets a new role here. Every Scatter that lands during the round adds half a Wild to a random Super Wild on the screen. Once a carrier has collected a whole Wild, it sends one more Wild from then on, so two Scatters that happen to pick the same carrier add a Wild to it for the rest of the round. With several carriers on screen the additions are spread at random and a single carrier grows unevenly. Big wins therefore come not from one pricey symbol but from a growing number of substitutes that land on many lines at once.

The 100x buy and its RTP

The round can be bought straight from the base game for 100 current total bets. The triggering spin guarantees three Scatters, which is the minimum version of the round: 6 wheels and 6 to 18 spins. Five Scatters cannot be bought outright, and with no retrigger a short bought round of six spins costs the same 100 bets as a long one of eighteen.

The RTP of the buy is 96.13%, against 96.00% in regular play. The gap is small: the buy removes the wait for Scatters but barely changes the maths by itself. When paying for entry makes sense at all is weighed up in the article on the bonus buy.

The 5,000x cap: how rare it is

If a round’s win reaches the limit, the round ends at once, the money is paid and the remaining features are forfeited. The game data itself states the odds of this outcome: roughly 1 in 5,033,792. The figure is counted in paid rounds: a spin together with the bonus it triggered counts as a single round.

The same limit applies in Hot Fiesta and Floating Dragon; the latter also has a Chinese storyline, yet it is built on a different mechanic.

Dragon Hero — RTP: 96.00%; Volatility: medium; Cap: 5,000x; Released: 2023-01-05.

Hot Fiesta — RTP: 96.56%; Volatility: medium; Cap: 5,000x; Released: 2021-04-22.

Floating Dragon — RTP: 96.71%; Volatility: high; Cap: 5,000x; Released: 2021-04-15.

Of the three, Dragon Hero has the lowest base RTP, while its buy returns 96.13%, a little above regular play.

Autoplay, turbo and the other buttons

The controls are the usual ones for the studio. Space starts and stops a spin, holding Space turns on turbo, and the speed button cycles through normal, quick and turbo. The autoplay menu lets you pick the number of spins and the stop conditions: on any win, when a feature is won, when a single win exceeds a set sum, or when the balance rises or falls by a set amount. The “if feature is won” condition keeps autoplay from racing through a round of sticky Wilds at full speed.

The game history opens from the settings menu. For a wheel round it keeps the whole cycle in one line, and the free spins win is credited in one piece after the round finishes. The full rules fit into six help screens.

Pros

  • Super Wilds on reels two to four distribute one to three Wilds after each spin.
  • During free spins, Super Wilds remain for the round and grow when Scatters appear.

Cons

  • Free spins cannot retrigger.
  • Distributed Wilds can land on the same cell, where an additional overlapping Wild adds no value.

How we check game information

FAQ

How many free spins can five Scatters give?

Five Scatters award 10 bonus wheels, each handing out 1, 2 or 3 spins, so the round opens with 10 to 30 spins. There is no retrigger: new Scatters in the bonus add no spins.

What do Scatters do during free spins?

Each Scatter adds half a Wild to a random Super Wild on the screen. Once a carrier collects a whole Wild, it sends one extra Wild for the rest of the round.

Where do Super Wilds appear in Dragon Hero and how do they change in the bonus?

Only on reels 2, 3 and 4; each holds 1 to 3 Wilds and sends them to random positions after the spin. In the base game the carrier disappears after the spin, while in free spins it stays until the round ends and sends Wilds after every spin.

What does the free spins buy give and what is its RTP?

The buy costs 100 current bets and guarantees three Scatters, which means 6 wheels and 6 to 18 spins. The RTP with the buy is 96.13%, against 96.00% in regular play.

How often does the maximum win land?

The game data puts it at about 1 in 5,033,792 paid rounds, where a spin together with the bonus it triggered counts as one round. At the cap the round ends and the remaining features are forfeited.
