Big Bad Wolf review

Big Bad Wolf is one of Quickspin’s first slots, released in 2013 and still one of the most played titles in the studio’s catalogue. Based on the fable of the three little pigs, the 5×3 game has fixed paylines and combines cascading reels with pigs that turn Wild. It picked up a Game of the Year trophy from the EGR Operator Awards, and Quickspin still describes it as one of its most successful titles across every market it serves. More than a decade on, it has become the root of Quickspin’s biggest franchise.

Swoops and pigs turning Wild

Combinations are paid on 25 lines. Swooping Reels remove winning symbols and drop new ones into the gaps, and the chain carries on while fresh combinations keep landing, so a single spin can pay several times.

The economics are worth spelling out. You pay once per spin; every later swoop inside that spin costs nothing. A run of four or five swoops isn’t a string of extra spins but a single paid round that keeps paying, which is why Quickspin’s own copy says winning rounds “can go on for a long time”.

Pigs Turn Wild is tied to the cascades. After every second swoop one of the three pig symbols becomes Wild, and six swoops in a row turn all three pigs Wild. The longer the chain, the more substitutes on the reels and the better the chance of extending it.

Swoops in a row Pigs now Wild
1 0
2–3 1
4–5 2
6+ 3

A whole pig-symbol type becomes a substitute, rather than a single cell. Each stage adds another type of Wild and can extend the chain, without guaranteeing another win. The wolf, pigs and blown-down houses connect the fairy tale to the rules as well as the art.

Blowing Down the House

Three bonus scatters award 10 free spins with Blowing Down the House. The wolf catches the pigs and blows their houses down. Moon symbols land on the last reel; collecting them gives extra free spins and a chance at a x2 multiplier. The pig-to-Wild feature stays active during free spins, so cascades matter just as much as in the base game.

Moons are described only on the last bonus reel, adding spins and offering a doubled payout. Exact moon requirements for each stage are unspecified. Pigs Turn Wild remains active in free spins. Bonus frequency and the probabilities of individual stages are undisclosed.

Two builds and observed maxima

Source of return 97.34% version 90.01% version
Base game 66.38% 37.49%
Base-game feature (listed separately) — 25.10%
Free spins 30.96% 27.42%
Total 97.34% 90.01%

Most return in the main build comes from regular spins with cascades. The reduced build lists its base feature separately; together with regular play it contributes 62.59%. This is a return split, not a hit probability or a guarantee of steady payouts.

Quickspin scores volatility at 4.24 out of 5 for the main build and 4 for the reduced one. Across a billion simulated spins the largest observed wins were 1,225x and 2,103x respectively. These are simulation results, not confirmed hard caps. The reported chance of a 100x-or-larger win is 1:1,043 and 1:1,331. A larger observed maximum does not mean a higher return; long-chain frequency is unknown.

Christmas Special keeps the original maths, cascades and bonus under snowy artwork. The Megaways edition from 2021 has up to 117,649 ways: Piggy Wild appears after 2, 4 and 6 tumbles on reels 2–5. Its bonus starts with 11 spins; the multiplier rises by one per win and persists between spins. Collecting three and six moons adds three spins at each stage and respectively +5 and +10 to the multiplier.

Megaways has 96.05% RTP, risk rated 5 out of 5 and a published top win of 30,540.35x; its buy costs 90x with 96.44% RTP. Pigs of Steel adds fortified pigs and three bonuses, with up to 18,000x at up to 96% RTP. Big Bad Wolf LIVE became Quickspin’s first live game. Gonzo’s Quest uses rising avalanche multipliers; Blood Suckers combines 98% RTP with low volatility, while Sakura Fortune brings Quickspin’s design to an Asian theme with high risk.

Pros

  • Swooping Reels creates cascades.
  • Pigs Turn Wild adds Wild transformations.

Cons

  • High volatility.
  • The listed maximum win is 1,225x.
