Misery Mining review
Misery Mining is a grim mining tale from Nolimit City, released in March 2022. An angry dwarf and his pierced rat are digging for the perfect beer recipe, and the player gets explosions, barriers and cascades. Unlike Fire in the Hole, the grid does not only grow upwards: only a small central area is open at first, and xBomb explosions push the barriers outwards in every direction. It arrived a year after the studio’s first mine and took that idea further: instead of unlocking rows from the top, each spin carves the play area out from the middle.
The central 3×3 opens towards 7×7
A new base spin opens the central 3×3, or twenty-seven ways. Matches run left to right across adjacent open reels. The full 7×7 supplies 7⁷ = 823,543 ways. Table squares are reference points rather than mandatory stages: barriers move individually and the board can be rectangular.
| Open area | Ways |
|---|---|
| 3×3 (start) | 27 |
| 4×4 | 256 |
| 5×5 | 3,125 |
| 6×6 | 46,656 |
| 7×7 (full mine) | 823,543 |
Moving the right wall gives four reels of height three:3⁴ = eighty-one. Moving the bottom wall then makes their height four:4⁴ = 256. Five reels of height four give 4⁵ = 1,024. Opening from centre to full board takes two steps on each side, eight wall moves in total. A corner bomb can neighbour two walls; a central bomb cannot move a wall it does not neighbour. Ways count alone does not establish award frequency or size.
An explosion raises the next collapse’s multiplier
An xBomb Wild substitutes except for Scatters and Super Scatters. Its explosion clears neighbouring symbols except those two types and other bombs, moves an adjacent barrier, and adds one to the next collapse’s multiplier. Wins and explosions trigger removal and refill. Multiplier growth and expansion live within the current spin rather than carrying into the next base spin.
A hypothetical xBomb beside the right wall on 3×3 opens 4×3 and the next collapse runs at 2x. Another explosion raises the next to 3x. Two bombs in one wave add two rather than double. An explosion can matter without the bomb joining a payment, but a larger board and multiplier still require new paying combinations. A later collapse need not pay more than an earlier one.

xBomb Mining requires a specific blank result
With no win, no bombs and fewer than three Scatters, remaining Scatters and Super Scatters turn into bombs without Wild substitution. They explode, move adjacent walls, increase the multiplier and cause refill. Two such targets beside the left and bottom walls hypothetically give a 3x next collapse and growth in two directions. Without targets there is nothing to convert; the function does not guarantee a later award.
Feature entry and Rat’s three lives
Scatters and Super Scatters trigger Misery Freespins; three ordinary Scatters open the round, and one or two Super Scatters participating give a larger start. Described starts are 3×3,4×4 and 5×5: nine, sixteen, twenty-five cells and twenty-seven,256,3,125 ways. The source does not provide a complete combination-to-start mapping. Mouse or Rat is chosen before the round.
Rat starts with three spins. Activating a coin wagon or Super Scatter resets the remainder to three rather than adding three. Two spins without that reset leave one; activation on the next restores three. The round ends after three spins without a reset event rather than necessarily without any monetary award. Hold and Win explainer describes related counter logic.
The top row shows wagons, multipliers, bombs, Super Scatters, a bag, chest, rat and dwarf. Exact rules for the last four and detailed Mouse mechanics are absent from the supplied description, as are mode RTPs. Twenty-five versus nine cells gives more positions without establishing nearly triple retrigger probability or a higher expected award.

Two builds and frequencies
RTP is 96.09% or 94.05%, a 2.04-percentage-point difference. In the main setting,61.07 points of return belong to the base and 35.02 to free spins, summing to 96.09. These are overall RTP components rather than conditional session return without a feature. Hit frequency is 28.57%, average feature frequency 1:220, and wins of at least 100x 1:1,251. That last frequency is not described as base-only. Risk is Extreme, ten on Nolimit City’s scale, and bets are 0.20–100.
Multiplying 0.3502×220 gives about 77.04 bets per natural feature if the share and frequency use the same setting and trigger definition. This is an estimate from aggregate metrics rather than buy RTP or a promised award. An average of 220 does not impose a waiting deadline.
A bonus buy explainer costs 66x–1,000x where available. The menu supplies individual variants and starts; price allocation across Mouse, Rat and board sizes is undisclosed. A larger start cannot automatically be labelled more expensive or better value. Separate buy RTP is absent.
The ceiling and mining family
Le Grande Jaune caps the overall round at 70,000x. Exceeding it stops the round and pays exactly the ceiling. Studio odds are about one in sixty million rounds. It equals 14,000 at bet 0.20 or 70,000 at one; full expansion and long cascades do not remove the limit.

Fire in the Hole 2 — Release: February 2024; How the grid grows: Builds on the first game; Max win: 65,000x; Bonus frequency: —.
Fire in the Hole 3 — Release: June 2025; How the grid grows: 6×6 grid; Max win: 70,000x; Bonus frequency: 1 in 231.
Fire in the Hole opens rows upward with six reels active from the start. Fire in the Hole 2 directly continues that first mine. Misery Mining expands outward from the centre; Fire in the Hole 3 returns to 6×6. Board and frequency differences do not establish comparative variance or an advantageous session duration.
