San Quentin xWays review
Nolimit City released San Quentin xWays on 12 January 2021, and it caused a stir right away. The studio itself describes it as the early-2021 release that “rocked the community” with news of a 150,000x maximum win, a remarkable number for a non-jackpot slot at the time. The action takes place in the yard of one of America’s most notorious maximum-security prisons. The grid is a modest 5×3, but locked cells above and below every reel can change its shape completely.
Cells above and below the reels
Wins pay across 243 ways, with matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left. What sets the game apart is its Enhancer Cells: one locked position above and one below each reel. When one or two bonus symbols land in the base game, each unlocks the Enhancer Cell on its own reel and turns into a Wild, so falling short of the feature still gives you something.
An open cell reveals a convict, Wild, Razor Split or xWays. One additional ordinary symbol in a column gives 4×3⁴ = 324 ways. This counts a specified layout rather than hit frequency. A blade splits regular reel positions in two, and two blades split them twice. xWays reveals a stack of four ordinary symbols; multiple xWays show the same type. Cell-content probabilities are unspecified, so an ordinary convict cannot be labelled the most frequent outcome.
For the three regular positions alone, one blade gives six and two give twelve: 12×3⁴ = 972 ways, or 12²×3³ = 3,888 with two such columns. Additional paying cells must be counted separately. Splitting reel one affects matches of every length; splitting reel five only five-reel matches. This does not establish comparative mean value without symbol weights. Punk Rocker introduced xWays to a wider audience in early 2020.
Split Wild and Lockdown entry
There’s a third way to multiply ways without any bonus symbols. In the base game a Split Wild can land on any reel, cutting every regular symbol in its column in two while leaving itself whole. It needs neither bonus symbols nor unlocked cells to work. Take reel three as an example: the Split Wild fills one of the three positions, the other two split in half, and the column now holds five symbols instead of three. That lifts the total from 243 ways to 405, and the Wild itself substitutes in every way that passes through its spot.
Three or more bonus symbols open Lockdown Spins. Three give one Jumping Wild, four give two and five give three; paid versions cost 100x, 400x and 2,000x. bonus buy guide explains feature purchasing. Before entry the cells reveal the spin count and a random convict receives an extra multiplier. All upper and lower cells remain open throughout. A new bonus symbol adds spins and another Jumping Wild; the exact added count and initial spin range are unspecified.
Nolimit Bonus entry and gambling a win for feature entry are unavailable in some markets. RTP for each purchased version is undisclosed, so more starting Wilds do not establish a better return. Subtracting the base share from overall RTP likewise does not give a comparable average prize for a particular buy: natural triggers include different starting conditions.
Wild doublings persist
Each spin the Jumping Wild selects a random regular position rather than an Enhancer Cell. Landing on a reel with active Razor Split doubles its multiplier, preserving it until the round ends. Nine doublings from 1x give 512x; hits need not be consecutive. For example, hits on spins two, five, six and seven give 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x, with intervening misses leaving the value intact.
Multiple Wilds grow their multipliers in parallel, while the convict selected before entry has a separate enhancement. However, probabilities of landing on split reels and the rule for combining multiple Wild multipliers are unspecified. Wild count cannot establish a precise large-prize probability, make 512x a routine outcome or define a mandatory recipe for the cap.
Maths and Death Row
RTP is 96.03%, with 94.11% and 90.11% versions, a 58.74% base share, 34.25% hit rate and an average Lockdown rate of one per 230 spins. Volatility is Extreme and stakes 0.2–32. These figures do not schedule bonuses, determine blank streaks or establish an average winning spin without matching counting units. Psycho Manhunt caps the total at 150,000x and ends Lockdown on reaching it; this is the round total rather than one Wild’s multiplier.
San Quentin 2: Death Row launched on 24 September 2024: 96.13% RTP, 26.9% hits, Green Mile once per 299, five-symbol xWays, top stake 100 and a 200,000x ceiling. Five spins can be risked for another Wild, up to five. One Wild opens cells on three reels, two on four, three or more on all five; the fourth and fifth start at 2x. A blade splits a bonus symbol into Wilds and splits its row; two xWays in one column give ten single Wilds.
The prison theme continued in Folsom Prison, Bangkok Hilton of 28 October 2025 with 44,444x and San Quentin Manhunt of 21 April 2026 with 46,532x. Tombstone RIP followed a year after the original and doubled its ceiling. The developer is Nolimit City.
